The Candover Brook which runs through the Candover Valley in winter time from Chilton and Brown Candover, to join the River Itchen eventually, is part of a Lottery-funded project to study rare chalk stream ecosystems, entitled Watercress and Winterbournes.
This ambitious project aims to celebrate, protect, and enhance the chalk stream headwaters of the Rivers Test and Itchen, namely Pillhill Brook, Upper Anton, the Bourne Rivulet, the Upper Test, the Candover Brook, the River Arle and Cheriton Stream.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust are working closely with 16 partner organisations and seven Community Catchment Groups to identify opportunities for protecting these special and globally rare chalk stream ecosystems. The project will also seek to preserve the region’s rich heritage and increase appreciation for the longstanding relationship between the river landscape and human activity.
This project is community-led and wide-ranging and Maggie Shelton, Community Catchments Officer with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has held meetings with valley residents about the winterbourne and chalk stream of the Candover Brook, and sharing ideas about protecting its ecology.
