Rapid rise in new cases of coronavirus in January

In common with much of England and especially the south-east, the new strain of the coronavirus has raged across Hampshire in January with a total of 25,382 new cases of the virus recorded during the month, a rise of 85% , excluding Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.  Add their numbers and the total across the county as a whole rises to 85,759, a rise 40,642 – 90% in just a month.

However, there are signs of the number of new cases daily being significantly lower in the past week, a hopeful sign that the current lockdown is beginning to have an effect.

The Hampshire death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has now reached a total of 1909, with Basingstoke and Deane totalling 251, a larger number than any other district in the county.  East Hampshire and Winchester, the two other districts most relevant to the Candover Valley, have 135 and 149 deaths respectively.

At the end of January Hampshire had recorded a total of 55,129 cases of coronavirus across the county, with Basingstoke having 7,157 cases, East Hampshire 4,277 and Winchester 4,3433.
