Covid dominates year in Hampshire

As Hampshire ended another year dominated by covid the number of new cases daily was rising rapidly across all the council districts. The county hit a new record of 3701 new cases a day on the last day of 2021 and most of the districts also reached new peaks.

Hampshire recorded  18,322 new cases in the last week of the year, while Basingstoke and Deane hit a new daily record of 544 cases, and its highest seven-day figure of 2,608 and 1,467 per 100,000 population.

But with the vaccine programme working well, Hampshire Hospitals were spared a repeat of the 2020 Christmas when there were 140 covid patients being treated, compared to 41 this year.

In other districts, East Hampshire had 1,375 new cases over the last week of the year and Winchester reported 1,632 new cases, with key numbers per 100,000 residents reaching  1,110 and 1,327 respectively.   Elsewhere, the New Forest and Test Valley followed the same pattern with 2,155 and 1,822 weekly cases, and rates per 100,000 residents of 1,199 and 1,432 respectively.

The vaccination programme has continued to speed up with the whole of Hampshire having reached 88.8% of its population over the age of 12 having received the first dose, 82.8% the second dose, and 64.8% the third dose. The numbers in some of the districts are not so good. Basingstoke & Deane has 86.5% first dose, 80.5% second dose and 57.4% third dose.  Several of the Basingstoke town areas have less than 50% of residents with a third dose.  But, this may be accounted for by the lower ages of the local population compared to the more rural areas.

However, in the more local areas, Old Basing & the Candovers at the year-end had recorded 92.1% first dose. 87.0% second dose and 70.3% third dose.  See table below  and more details here.  Covid- December 2021
